My role at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is combined of APN and Case Management roles and my primary focus is the Pediatric Orthopaedic Patient population. I also provide case management for the Pediatric Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery patients.
For the orthopaedic patients, I provide care during the day when the physicians are in the OR and clinic. We discuss cases daily, the plan for the day and modify as indicated by patient condition. I provide patient and family teaching, set up home care with the assistance of the discharge planner, trouble shoot patient issues, and provide support to patients and staff as needed. Most importantly, I encourage.
For the neurosurgery and plastic surgery patients, I set up home care, arrange DME or other services as needed. I collaborate closely with a discharge planner who provides additional assistance with patient management.
The biggest challenge which is also an opportunity opportunity is helping patients and families realize they really can do what we are asking them to do. It is not unusual for a patient or family to say “I cannot get out of bed. I cannot do that dressing change. I cannot provide the care my child needs at home. There is no way any of this is possible.” It rewarding to help a patient and family transition from a resistant and intimidated state of m
ind to one that is “OK, I really can do this. I really can move . I can get out of bed. I can do that dressing change. I can do the pin care on my child’s external fixator.”
I am most proud of achieving my MSN. I had a young child when I started and during that educational process, had 2 more children and continued to work full time.
Outside of work I love to read, enjoy camping and working in my yard, music, and flower arranging
