Vanderbilt ranks 4th in the country in NIH funding received by clinical Otolaryngology Departments. This represents the immense value we place on research. Residents are strongly encouraged to participate in research throughout all 5 years of their residency. In addition, 6 months in the PGY-3 year is entirely dedicated to research of a resident's choice. Research can be clinical, translational, or basic science in nature. Projects can be done within the department of Otolaryngology, through any other Vanderbilt University department, or at other academic institutions, including those in different countries. Recently, residents have worked with the World Health Organization and carried out research in Africa and South America. Residents engage in projects under the guidance of a physician or research faculty mentor.
