Investigational Drug Service

The Investigational Drug Service (IDS)  is a team of specially trained pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians within the VUMC Department of Pharmaceutical Services. The IDS team is dedicated to helping investigators accomplish research goals while maintaining compliance with all applicable standards and regulations. Study protocol dispensing can be accommodated for inpatient and outpatient studies on the main campus and at clinic sites such as One Hundred Oaks.

The IDS dispensing area is located in the Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH) Central Pharmacy. The IDS offices are adjacent to Pharmacy Administration in VUH.

Hours of Operation

Dispensing of investigational agents is available 24 hours a day. The IDS staff is on site Monday through Friday from 0700-1730. Holidays for the services generally mirror those of VUH and the Vanderbilt Medical Group and Clinic. Dispensing services are supported by the Central Pharmacy and/or Sterile Admixture staff on nights, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, IDS staff members are available oncall at all times to provide assistance.

In addition to dispensing, the IDS staff can provide an array of services and advice to investigators on various topics including:

  • Budgeting (click here for access to the IDS budget tool, requires a VUNet ID)
  • Randomization
  • Blinding and compounding of placebo controls
  • Record keeping and retention
  • HEO/Wiz order sets for investigational protocols
  • Quality assurance monitoring
