Generic ciprofloxacin (Cipro) tablets have been available since fall 2004. The IV formulation is expected to come off patent later this year (2006). Oral ciprofloxacin is a good alternative to the branded fluroquinolones (such as Levaquin, and Avalox) for the treatment of gram negative infections, such as those that commonly cause urinary tract infections. Branded Cipro costs $5.00 for the 500 mg tablet while the generic is 9 cents or $0.09. (Please note that while ciprofloxacin is an excellent choice for gram negative infections, it should not be used for the treatment of gram positive infections, such as those that cause community-acquired pneumonia.) Using generic options like ciprofloxacin when appropriate saves outpatients money on their co-payments or out of pocket expense.
