The Role and Responsibilities of the Orientee:

The orientee accepts shared responsibility (with the preceptor) for own learning and orientation; the optimal orientation is a result of the collaborative relationship of orientee with preceptor.

Communication ~ The orientee should:

  • Develop a comfortable, professional relationship with preceptor that supports open communication.
  • Be honest about learning process: best learning style; preferred way to get feedback/coaching; what learning needs exist; when ready to take on more or is overloaded.
  • Listen actively to understand, be receptive to both positive and negative feedback.
  • Participate in regular debriefings with various members of orientation team; actively engage in discussions to assess progress and identify areas for continued development.
  • Inform educator/manager if preceptor is not able to meet learning needs.


Behavior ~ The orientee should:

  • In all communications, be inquisitive and conscious of the value of those who provide help and assistance to “the Vanderbilt way.”
  • Embrace the Credo; practice reliable and punctual attendance and adherence to the dress code.
  • Respect the diversity of the health care team as well as the patient population.
  • Be flexible in working preceptor’s schedule (except in unusual situations).
  • Celebrate the milestones in the learning process.
  • Take boards in a timely manner (preferably within 4-to-6 weeks of hire date).
