About Us:

We are a regional and national referral center for children age newborn to 18 who have cardiac needs.  Our unit specializes in caring for a pediatric patient population that includes medically managed cardiac and post-operative cardiac surgery patients.  A high percentage of our inpatients are infants that require special feeding and monitoring.

Our focus is to provide patients and their families with very specific education about their medical care.  Our goal is to embrace a mindset of leaving “no stone unturned” before discharging a family.

Our health care team is dedicated to providing each patient and their family with the most comprehensive plan for their care.  Every morning a multidisciplinary team gathers and walks from room to room to discuss the plan on each patient that is being taken care of on this unit.  This team is comprised of a Cardiologist and their team of fellows or residents, a Cardiology specific Nurse Practitioner, a dietitian, a pharmacist, a social worker and a case manager, the Charge Nurse, and the bedside nurse.  Each family is encouraged to participate in this discussion and ask questions to clarify the plan.

A typical shift for our nurses includes working with the Cardiology Physician staff to ensure the needs of our patients and their families are met.   We have a wireless telemetry system that allows the children to engage in daily physical activities while being monitored from a central monitoring system at the nurses’ station.

Awards and Recognitions:

The Pediatric Cardiology Inpatient Unit has been the recipient of the PRC award  Top 10% nationally for “Overall Quality of Care” in 2009 and 2011.

Our nursing team was awarded the The Best Nursing Team Award by the Summer 2013 Pediatric Nurse Residency group.

We are a very motivated group of staff who focuses on the most minute detail to assure that excellent and safe patient care is delivered.
