Inpatient Medical and Cardiology Stepdown Unit

Welcome to the Inpatient Cardiology Stepdown Unit at the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute!

We primarily care for patients with congestive heart failure, chest pain, arrhythmia, left ventricular assist device (LVAD), heart transplants, overflow cardiac surgery patients, and other cardiovascular dysfunction. We also manage cardiac patients who require peritoneal dialysis. We have a very busy unit with patients being admitted and discharged or going to and from cardiac procedures throughout the day, so we look for nurses who thrive in a fast-paced environment. Despite the business, the work is rewarding. Good critical thinking skills are a must. Teamwork is extremely important in our unit. We expect our staff to ask for help when needed, and to lend a helping hand when available. We have a very active Unit Board with staff-driven subcommittees, such as the morale, wellness, quality, and education committees. The wellness committee, for example, plans hikes and meetups at a dog park, and the morale committee organizes a holiday gift exchange and other holiday celebrations. We also participate in a number of research projects — many of them studying the effectiveness of medications we give our patients. My management style is collaborative. I consider myself more a facilitator than a boss. I allow staff to make as many decisions as possible and try to provide the support they need to then implement those decisions. If you have an interest in cardiovascular care, apply now and join us!

“If there is one word that I can think of when I think about our unit, it is ‘teamwork.’ We truly care about one another. We are colleagues, but more importantly, we’re friends. We work seamlessly with one another and look out for each other and our patients. The teamwork we establish with our patients is also very important. We get some patients that have long-term stays or continually come back to our floor, and we pride ourselves on the relationships we build with our patients and their families. We are a family on this unit.”
