Float Pool (Adult)

Welcome to the Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital Float Pool!

Our float pool nurses assist units in times of unusually heavy workloads or when there are vacancies. We are available to ‘float’ to all units in the adult hospital, including the Emergency Department, the post-anesthesia care unit and other specialty areas. We also float to Vanderbilt’s outpatient clinics. Working in the Float Pool is an opportunity for nurses who value change and exhibit flexibility. Our float pool nurses may be asked to work on two different units during a single 12-hour shift. This is also an opportunity for nurses who are inquisitive and like to learn. Because each unit often requires specific training, many float pool nurses end up getting additional training and certifications in multiple areas, making them exceptionally well-rounded. We look for go-getters and self-starters. We’re not in the clinical areas with all our nurses — although we round with nurses as often as we can — so we rely on them to perform at their best. We are not traveling nurses. Our float pool nurses are full-time employees. We participate in shared governance and are eligible for all the same benefits as nurses in other units. Because our team is so large, keeping up with information can be difficult, so our nurses started a newsletter. We also established a buddy system for new hires. New nurses are paired with another float pool nurse who can answer questions and serve as an informal mentor. If you’d like to learn something new every day and you value flexibility, apply now and join us!

“Working as a nurse in the float pool is exciting, demanding and comes with a lot of daily challenges. However, the payoff is that you will quickly become a well-rounded and confident team member wherever you go. As a nurse in the float pool at Vanderbilt, I’ve learned more organizational and clinical skills than ever before and gained a true understanding of the body, mind and spirit.”
