What has been your career path?
Where are you now on your path?
After accepting a position as a part of the Winter 2015 Nurse Residency cohort, I immediately began developing goals for myself. I have accomplished many of those goals in the last two and a half years. I am a Preceptor and Mentor in the Adult ED, as well as in various leadership roles. I am the chair of the Adult ED Preceptor committee and mentor group. I am an Epic Preceptor and I was recently a Magnet champion and Escort for our third Magnet Designation Site Visit. I am also the Overview Day Coordinator, where I welcome all of the new Adult ED staff members and give them the most important information on their first day. I was also recently selected to be a Relief Staff Leader (RSL) in the Adult ED.
How did Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Nurse Residency Program support your transition to practice? What has the experience meant to you?
The VUMC Nurse Residency Program was a great opportunity for me to grow early and to build upon what I learned in nursing school. I was given several resources to help begin my nursing journey. I enjoyed being able to meet back with other nurse residents and learn from each other's experiences. It has meant a lot to me to have been selected as a part of the Nurse Residency Program. I gained a strong foundation and have built upon it and I would not be the nurse I am today without being a part of the Nurse Residency Program.
Did you consider other residency programs? Why did you choose Vanderbilt?
I applied to several other programs, however Vanderbilt was my number one choice. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself and I was immediately drawn to the Vanderbilt Credo. I also wanted to be a part of one of the best level 1 trauma centers. I knew Emergency nursing was my passion and what better way to dive into that than by being a part of the Vanderbilt Adult ED.
What is it about being a Vanderbilt nurse that makes you proud?
I am proud to be a Vanderbilt nurse because as a renowned organization, Vanderbilt has given me the opportunity to learn and grow from a new grad to a leader in the Adult ED. It also makes me proud that every time my mom tells someone that I'm a Vanderbilt nurse, they immediately tell her that's amazing. I enjoy being a part of a group of Magnet nurses who truly care about the well-being of their patients.
