Medicine Cardiac Stepdown, 8th Floor Medical Center East

Kim LinvilleHello and welcome to our unit!

I’m Kim Hurt, MSN, RN, NE-BC, manager of the Medicine Cardiac Stepdown unit. We are located on the 8th floor of Medical Center East at Vanderbilt University Hospital.

The environment on our unit is friendly, focused on team work, and flexible to accommodate our patients’ needs.

We care for adult patients 18 and older who are being treated for a variety of medical diagnoses. Our patients are unique because of their diverse diagnoses and specialized medical needs.

One of the perks of working on my unit is the rare opportunity to be a part of a brand new unit and have an impact on the unit’s growth. With 37 beds, we are the largest unit within Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Our nurses are successful because they have strong assessment and communication skills, rely on each for support, and adapt easily to new challenges.

We orient new nurses to our unit by providing a seven-week unit specific orientation with dedicated preceptors.

Our unit is in the Adult Acute Care Medicine track of the Nurse Residency Program.

We encourage professional growth.
If your career goal is to gain strong clinical experiences in different areas, Medicine Cardiac Stepdown can help with this by exposing you to skill sets that can crossover to other medicine units.

If you have any questions about our unit, please email me at or visit Nursing Careers at Vanderbilt to explore open nursing positions.

"It has been my pleasure to transition floors within Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 8 Medical Center East has provided staff with both new educational and leadership opportunities. For me, I enjoy taking care of a new population of patients and each day getting a mix of both medicine and cardiac step-down patients, along with cardiac observation patients. New equipment, spacious rooms, and dedicated staff make coming into work everyday enjoyable. 8MCE has provided me new leadership opportunites from creating and leading a brand new unit board, to coaching and precepting new nurses residents and beginning my career as an RSL. I am excited to see what else 8MCE has in store for us!"
Megan W., BSN, RN II, RSL
8MCE Unit Board Co-Chair
"8MCE is a great unit to work on because you get a wide variety of patients in the ICU step-down population that have different diagnoses and diseases that allow you to broaden your nursing skills and knowledge. The nursing staff here is full of energy and passion and works very well as a team, which creates a welcoming environment for all staff including float nurses or new employees. The management in this unit always does a terrific job at listening and advocating for their staff in order to help improve patient outcomes, better staff workflow, or help staff advance in their career. Any issue that arises, they are quick to step in and elevate those concerns to correct or prevent problems from occurring. Vanderbilt itself is a wonderful healthcare system to work for but 8MCE adds in that extra touch to make you feel at home!"
