SHOULD I TEST FOR MEASLES?

Information for Tennessee Healthcare Providers

VUMC PROVIDERS PLEASE NOTE:  If you suspect your patient may have measles, please contact:

  • VUMC Infection Prevention (pager 615-835-1205)
  • TN State Epidemiologist (615-741-7247)

Testing at the State Lab for Measles PCR or Measles Serology requires prior consultation directly with a State Epidemiologist or indirectly through VUMC Infection Prevention (will then coordinate with State Epidemiologist).

More information is also available on the VUMC  Infection Prevention web site.

A confirmed case of measles has been reported in East Tennessee and additional cases are expected. The TN Department of Health has released a Measles Information Guide for TN healthcare providers. Early contact with public health authorities is essential to successful control of spread.  The guide also includes a link to connect with the appropriate Public Health Department for additional information and assistance.

TN Department of Health has also provided a detailed information sheet on steps providers and healthcare facilities should take if they suspect measles in their patient. Providers are urged to review this information in preparation for the possibility of having to manage patients for whom measles is suspected.

Both documents are available through the links below.
